Since PALS was hosting Hastings’ only Valentine’s Day party last week, we promptly renamed the holiday “PALentine’s Day” and got the school together for an epic party at Emperor Norton’s. Over two hundred students packed the bar for drink specials ($6 beer and Fireball?!) and some classic PALentines partying. One PALS alumnus (David Abella, Boalt Hall ’10 – pictured above) even spontaneously joined in on the fun!

A few of us attended the Filipino Bar Association of Northern California’s (FBANC) “Meet the General Counsel” panel at Sedgwick LLP’s San Francisco office. The event was great opportunity to hear from some of the country’s leading Asian-American in-house attorneys. As always, it was a pleasure sharing drinks and conversation with FBANC attorneys and fellow PALS members from USF and Golden Gate.

Selling lumpia on The Beach for typhoon relief!

After tragedy struck the Philippines early last November, PALS quickly organized to raise money to contribute to Typhoon Haiyan relief. With your help, we were able to make a small difference.

Together, we were able to raise over $1,000, all of which helped the West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center bring food and supplies directly to victims of the typhoon. We were really blown away by the response: those who flocked to buy our lumpia on The Beach (some even donating way more than we asked for),  those who contributed food and clothes to send abroad, and those who donated to our campaign online.

Even though it was around finals time, we’re proud that the Hastings and PALS community still contributed time and money to the relief efforts. Thank you so much to anyone who donated or merely supported our cause.

For more information on our relief efforts or if you’d like to help even more, contact us at pals@uchastings.edu.

As you all know, Central Philippines is in need of much help after last weekend’s devastating typhoon. First of all, the PALS Board sincerely hope your families and friends abroad are safe. Currently, in conjunction with FBANC and West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center, we are organizing a few relief efforts that enables Hastings students to help without leaving campus:
(1) Fundraiser and Food Drive - Thursday (11/14), 10am-2pm @ The Beach
To help the victims of the typhoon, PALS will raise money by selling lumpia and chicken adobo Thursday (11/14) from 10am-2pm on The Beach.
PALS will also be collecting canned foods, medicine and other non-perishable items such as rice, bottled water, clothes and toiletries to deliver to the West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center in the coming weeks. West Bay is located at 175 7th Street in San Francisco. We will also be accepting monetary donations both big and small. Donations will be used to purchase non-perishable food and medicine to deliver directly to the victims. Every contribution helps.
(2) Online Donations - http://tinyurl.com/PALSrelief
If you can, you can also donate to the PALS relief website, which will be a very valuable contribution to West Bay Pilipino’s relief efforts. Please feel free to forward this link along.

2nd Annual Take Me Out To The Ballgame! by uchastingspals

PALS members and other Hastings students had a blast at AT&T Park’s 2013 Filipino Heritage Night last Thursday. Students were able to see some traditional Filipino festivities at the pre-game party, then mingle with FBANC attorneys while watching the Giants take on the Diamondbacks. The night was a great opportunity to celebrate our Filipino heritage and network with local attorneys, all while taking in America’s pastime (plus a few hot dogs!).

Marching in the 2013 Pistahan Parade with Assemblymember Rob Bonta! by uchastingspals

Last weekend, some PALS Board members were invited to march with Assemblymember Rob Bonta, the first Filipino American elected to the California State Legislature, in the 20th Annual Pistahan Parade. The Pistahan Parade and Filipino Cultural Festival is the largest Filipino-related celebration in the country, and it sure felt like it! PALS members were able to enjoy the festival by feasting on some pancit while watching some traditional Filipino dances. We even got the chance to meet MMA fighter Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Muñoz.

Assemblymember Bonta was very kind in inviting PALS Board members to accompany his motorcade in the parade. Before being elected to the California Assembly, he was a practicing attorney in the Bay Area after graduating from Yale Law School. He remains very active in the local Fil-Am community and is an inspiring figure for PALS members today.
