I just wanted to send out a personal invite for you to attend the Hastings to Haiti Symposium on October 23. After 10 years of a fruitful partnership with the ESCDROJ law school in Jeremie, Haiti, we have finally been able to secure funding and support to bring Haitian law students to UC Hastings for one week culminating in the aforementioned symposium. The symposium features Father Jomanas who founded what is known as one of the most progressive law schools in Haiti and is followed by a panel on accountability in and reparations for Haiti. Haiti is the first and last slave colony to have won its freedom. It has also had a tumultuous relationship with the United States and is a focal point for human rights advocates around the world.

I participated in Hastings to Haiti because the work of public interest/civil and human rights advocates are never isolated endeavors, as such we have much to learn from the complex and oppressive lessons of Haiti’s past, present, and future. To make it even more personal, the term “gook” which we all know so well, was first used in Haiti by US soldiers against Haitians and has remained a term of racism and war ever since.  The predecessor of “gook” was first used against Filipinos when US soldiers referred to Filipinos as “goo goo.”

When: Oct. 23, 2008
Time: 4:30 PM – 7PM (reception to follow sponsored by the Office of the Academic Dean)
Where: 200 McAllister, Alumni Reception Center

I highly urge you to attend this event and meet some of the most active members of the Haitian Rights community. You will also meet some very inspiring Haitian advocates who may be attending Hastings classes with several of you throughout the week. This is such an exciting time for Hastings to Haiti and I am so sad that I have to experience it from afar, so I hope that you will be there instead.
