UC Hastings would like to extend an invitation to the youth of your organization to attend the 5th annual “Day @ Law School.” This exciting and rewarding event will take place on Saturday, February 21, 2009 from 9:00am-3:30pm. The program is designed to implant the seeds of higher education in students from schools throughout the Bay Area.

“A Day @ Law School” History:

In 2004, La Raza Law Student Association, the Black Law Student Association, and the Hastings Race and Poverty Law Journal joined efforts with the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office to diversify the racial, ethnic, and socio-economic make up of the student body at UC Hastings. Students recognized the need to direct critical attention to traditionally underrepresented minority students at an early age who did not even have the luxury of envisioning themselves graduating from high school, let alone the fortune of graduating from law school. Our first event netted 55 youth participants. Two years later, we attracted over 150 students, parents, and youth coordinators. Needless to say, our numbers and strength have grown throughout the years.

“A Day @ Law School” is in line with both the ABA and the California Bar Association’s goals of expanding the pipeline into the legal profession. Please visit their websites and view articles written on “A Day @ Law School” at:

In previous years, families traveled from as far as Sacramento to attend. Most attendees, however, came from underserved neighborhoods within San Francisco, such as the Tenderloin and Bay View/Hunter’s Point. This year, we hope to increase our reach across the Bay, meet new schools and strengthen our relationships with the community.

As the program evolves, we continue to refine and improve our program. This year, we will open our doors at 8:30 a.m. for registration and provide continental breakfast. The program will commence at 9:00 a.m. with a welcome session, specifically tailored to separately accommodate students from elementary, middle, and high school. The welcome session will be followed by dividing students into smaller, age-conscious groups where interactive discussions about the significance of law, higher education, and a professional career will be lead by progressive law students. The “class session” portion will be followed by lunch and a more private mentoring session with a law student. After lunch, attendees will be given a tour of the law school, including the dormitories.

Please RSVP:

We look forward to having the youth from your school or programs attend this informational and motivational event. Please RSVP as soon as possible to hastingsoutreach@gmail.com with a list of students, including each persons full name, age, grade, and school. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to inquire to the email listed above or call (858) 688-1329.

Sincerely,

Day @ Law School Planning Committee
