Marching in the 2013 Pistahan Parade with Assemblymember Rob Bonta! by uchastingspals

Last weekend, some PALS Board members were invited to march with Assemblymember Rob Bonta, the first Filipino American elected to the California State Legislature, in the 20th Annual Pistahan Parade. The Pistahan Parade and Filipino Cultural Festival is the largest Filipino-related celebration in the country, and it sure felt like it! PALS members were able to enjoy the festival by feasting on some pancit while watching some traditional Filipino dances. We even got the chance to meet MMA fighter Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Muñoz.

Assemblymember Bonta was very kind in inviting PALS Board members to accompany his motorcade in the parade. Before being elected to the California Assembly, he was a practicing attorney in the Bay Area after graduating from Yale Law School. He remains very active in the local Fil-Am community and is an inspiring figure for PALS members today.

PALS/VALS Karaoke Night: FINAL DETAILS! by uchastingspals

Karaoke Night is shaping up to be an epic event.  There’s going to be good food, good booze, and (since PALS will be singing) GREAT music.  All in a private karaoke room that PALS has reserved for THREE HOURS.  That’s plenty of time for Kelvin Ko and Matt Tabo to express their feelings (for each other).

Some snacks and drink specials will start us off.  After that everyone will be able to purchase drinks/food from the menu, so please bring some extra cash.  Remember: happy hour lasts only till 9 pm so make sure to arrive early!

Date: Friday, February 18th
Time: 7:45 pm – 10:45 pm
Cost: $10 per person
Location: Pandora
Address: 177 Eddy St. (between Taylor St. and Mason St.)

The best bet for insuring that you make it into the private room is to RSVP either on the facebook event page or directly to tylercesar@gmail.com.

Directions: From school or the Tower, head east on McAllister, towards Market.  Turn left on Market.  Turn left on 6th/Taylor.  Then make your second right onto Eddy.

Caution:  If you are walking from school to Pandora, please be careful and always walk in groups!  Respect the T-loin and the T-Loin will respect you.  Or at the very least, it will not rob you.

Public Safety Escort Van: Pandora is within the Public Safety Escort Van’s coverage and leaves the 200 building every half-hour starting at 5:00 pm.  So, you should be able to catch the 7:30 pm shuttle and get to Pandora in time which is the safest alternative (not to mention the most stylish).

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the PALS Social Chair, Tyler Cesar at the email above.

Filipinos and karaoke go together like… well like Filipinos and karaoke. This hasn’t been lost on the general public either. Before you can finish Googling “Filipinos love” Google will supply “karaoke”. Apparently Filipinos love karaoke more than eating and basketball. Hey, if Google says it, it has to be true.

It’s time to break out your Magic Mic and celebrate your inner Filipino! PALS is teaming up with VALS and doing Kara…oke on Friday, February 18th! Details are still being worked out, but so in the interest of planning ahead, here are the tentative deets:

Event: PALS/VALS Karaoke Night
Date: Friday, February 18th
Time: 8 pm – 12 pm (tentative) (ALSO, may have a pre-gaming/happy hour session to warm up those vocal chords)
Location: TBA

Cost: $20 (estimated) – as soon as the location is locked down we’ll have more details on price.

NOTE: This was a ton of fun last year and there has been a lot of interest this year. Space will be limited, so MAKE SURE you look out for the updates.

Filipino food is awesome, as anyone who has eaten a whole plate of lumpia can attest to.  It’s not just delicious, it satisfies the soul.  The Filipino Dishcrawl captures all of those aspects of Filipino cuisine, but does it GOURMET STYLE.  Take a look at the link below for photos and a full description.  For those that made it to the last Dishcrawl, you can relive the experience.  For those that missed it… don’t be sad, this will give you incentive to make the next one.  Get in touch with Tyler Cesar for more details on how you can attend, or check back with the PALS blogs for more information as it becomes available!

Learn Tinikling for Culture Night! by uchastingspals

Do you have rhythm in your soul?  Do you enjoy expressing yourself with dance?  Are you energized by jumping out of the way of bamboo poles being slapped together?  Then Tinikling is for you.  Tinikling, for those not in the know, is the National Dance of the Philippines, a traditional folk dance two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance.  It’s like Thriller meets jump roping.

Come join your PALS in putting together a Tinikling performance for Culture Night on February 4th. For those that haven’t been yet, Culture Night is a blast, and Tinikling is always a crowd pleaser.   Contact Mari Bandoma bandomam@uchastings.edu for more details.  No Tinikling experience is required.
